Iran military official says war with United States ‘likely’ to restart as Donald Trump says he is ‘not satisfied’ with Iran’s proposal

A senior Iran military official has warned that renewed conflict with the United States is “likely” after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposal aimed at easing tensions.

The draft, delivered to Washington through Pakistan on Thursday evening, reportedly sought to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore normal shipping in exchange for ending the US blockade on Iranian ports before any discussions on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Mohammad Jafar Asadi said the fragile truce remains uncertain, warning that fresh hostilities were possible and accusing Washington of failing to honour past commitments.

Trump said he was “not satisfied” with what Iran had offered, even as he indicated he would prefer a negotiated settlement over renewed military action. “Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever — or do we want to try and make a deal?” he said, adding that he would rather avoid military escalation “on a human basis.”

The conflict, which began after joint US and Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, has remained paused since a temporary ceasefire took effect on April 8.

The standoff has also triggered a legal and political dispute in Washington over whether Trump is required to seek congressional approval for any renewed military engagement, with Democrats challenging the administration’s argument that the ceasefire pauses the statutory deadline.
