Physician Reveals One Superfood Packed with Healthy Fats, Vitamins, and Minerals
Often dismissed as just another canned fish, Sardines may actually be one of the rare foods that live up to the “superfood” tag, according to physician Kunal Sood. Packed with essential nutrients, sardines offer an impressive combination of heart-healthy fats, high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals in a small, affordable serving.
Dr Sood highlights that sardines are rich in EPA and DHA, the most beneficial forms of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to lower triglyceride levels and improved cardiovascular health. While they are not a miracle cure, regularly replacing highly processed foods with omega-3-rich fish can help support a healthier lipid profile and overall heart health.
Beyond their omega-3 content, sardines are an excellent source of vitamin B12, a crucial nutrient for nerve function, DNA production, and healthy red blood cell formation. When consumed with their soft edible bones, they also provide substantial amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, making them particularly beneficial for maintaining strong bones.
Another advantage is their relatively low mercury content. Because sardines are small fish lower on the food chain, they accumulate far less mercury than larger predatory species, making them a safer option for frequent consumption.
However, Dr Sood cautions that canned sardines can be high in sodium, especially varieties preserved in brine. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney conditions should check nutrition labels carefully and choose lower-sodium options where possible.
Despite this caveat, sardines remain one of the most nutrient-dense and cost-effective protein sources available, offering a powerful nutritional package that supports heart, brain, and bone health.
