Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to travel to the United States in December to attend the G20 summit, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said, adding that Washington would welcome another visit by the Indian leader.

Speaking at the sidelines of the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, Gor said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had invited Modi during his recent India visit. He also expressed optimism that the interim India-US trade agreement would be finalised “sooner rather than later.”

Gor said US President Donald Trump remains closely involved in strengthening bilateral ties, describing the relationship as mutually beneficial with businesses from both countries expanding investments.

On the trade negotiations, Gor said US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has Trump’s confidence and that discussions were progressing, though the agreement involves thousands of issues and complex legal negotiations.

Meanwhile, USISPF Honorary Senior Advisor Al Mason said the India-US relationship had regained “historic momentum” and credited Gor with helping rebuild communication between Trump and Modi.

Mason said the relationship between the two leaders had faced challenges over trade, domestic priorities and bureaucratic issues but was now moving forward again. He said Gor conveyed three key messages from Trump to Modi: respect for India’s growth, admiration for Modi’s leadership and a desire for stronger India-US ties.

Asked about a possible Trump visit to India, Gor said it was unlikely during the US midterm election period but could happen next year.

On Modi’s expected US visit, Gor said, “Secretary Marco Rubio invited PM Modi while visiting him… We would love to have him back here. And I know he’s coming in December for the G20.”

The US envoy also discussed the upcoming Quad meeting in the Philippines, saying the focus would be on strengthening cooperation among the four nations, particularly on Pacific security.

The 2026 G20 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled to be held on December 14-15 at Trump National Doral Miami, marking the first time the United States will host the G20 leaders’ meeting since 2009.
