Iran Talks Security Zone Disrupts Flights at Zurich Airport

A technical issue in Switzerland’s air traffic control system caused disruptions at Zurich Airport on Sunday after security measures for US-Iran peace talks required the creation of a temporary restricted airspace zone near the negotiation site.

Swiss air traffic control authority Skyguide said the problem occurred after a restricted zone over Burgenstock, the Swiss mountain resort hosting the talks, was added to radar display systems. The security zone was introduced at short notice because the decision to hold the latest round of negotiations was only finalized on Saturday.

Skyguide later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and flight operations returned to normal. The authority said the systems were functioning properly and security had remained intact throughout the disruption.

The technical fault led to the cancellation of 12 arriving flights and 14 departing flights by midday, while at least 60 departures faced delays, according to a Zurich Airport spokesperson.

The disruption came as US Vice President JD Vance arrived at Burgenstock for talks with Iran under a tentative peace framework. However, the diplomatic efforts were overshadowed by Iran’s announcement that it had again imposed restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Switzerland had promised a secure and discreet environment for the negotiations at the resort, located more than 50 kilometers south of Zurich Airport, as officials worked to maintain security around the high-level talks.
