Shreyas Iyer Replaces Suryakumar as T20I Captain; Sooryavanshi Makes History with India Call-Up

The BCCI on Saturday ushered in a new era in India’s T20I setup, naming Shreyas Iyer as captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games in September, while ending Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure less than a year after he led India to the T20 World Cup title.

The squads were announced by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in the presence of chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. The move marks the second leadership change in Indian cricket in under a year involving a captain who had recently won an ICC trophy. Last year, Shubman Gill succeeded Rohit Sharma following India’s Champions Trophy triumph.

Suryakumar’s removal is particularly striking given that the 35-year-old captained India to the T20 World Cup title in what has now become his most recent international appearance. The senior batter has also been omitted from all three T20I squads announced on Saturday.

“We have seen what Shreyas Iyer has done in different seasons with different teams. He was close to getting into the World Cup squad as well. He is a standout candidate with enough experience. It’s a tough one on SKY. You try reassessing after the World Cup, and this was the best way forward,” Agarkar said.

Sooryavanshi Earns Historic Call-Up

The beginning of the Shreyas Iyer era could also mark the arrival of Indian cricket’s next big star, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi receiving his maiden national call-up.

At just 15 years of age, Sooryavanshi becomes the youngest player ever selected in an Indian senior squad, surpassing a record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for nearly four decades.

The left-handed batter enjoyed a dream IPL 2026 season, amassing 776 runs to finish as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and become the youngest player to win the Orange Cap. He also broke a long-standing six-hitting record previously held by Chris Gayle.

Having already been named in India A squads for assignments against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A, Sooryavanshi now has the opportunity to make an immediate impact at senior international level.

Curtains for Suryakumar?

Suryakumar’s international future appears uncertain after a difficult period marked by declining form.

The Mumbai batter failed to register a T20I half-century in 2025 and struggled to make a significant impact during India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, apart from a notable innings against the USA in the opening match.

In contrast, Iyer has strengthened his credentials with consistent performances over the past two IPL seasons. After scoring more than 600 runs in IPL 2025, he followed it up with nearly 500 runs in IPL 2026. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 before guiding Punjab Kings to the final the following season.

The selectors appear to have rewarded both his batting consistency and leadership credentials, with Iyer expected to take over the No. 4 role in India’s T20I batting order as well.

Bumrah Reserved for Asian Games

India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the Ireland and England tours but returns for the Asian Games squad.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Hardik Pandya has not been included in any of the squads as the team management continues to manage his workload ahead of next year’s ODI World Cup.

The selections underline India’s focus on transition and squad-building as it begins preparations for major global tournaments in the coming years.
